The Howick Hornets drew 2016 runners up University Blues round 1 at home at the Hornest Nest. It was always going to be a hard battle to topple the clinical Uni Blues however the Hornets fought their way through each quarter never giving up.
Starting with 9 debutant's on the Hornets came out blazing scoring the first goal in the opening minutes. However Uni fought back managed to amount a good lead at the end of the first half. The Hornets back men were kept busy most of the first half but applied pressure to every kick pass and contest forcing Uni into some uncharacteristic mistakes.
The Hornets shook off their first game nerves and improved as the game went on, outscoring each previous quarter. Players started to connect with each other and some good football was being played. The Hornets won the final quarter scoring 3.1 - 19 to Uni's 2.5 -17. The effort put in by the team especially in the last quarter shows a lot of heart and determination and that the Hornets will not give up until the final whistle.

Aynsley Hilton for his defensive effort on a much taller full forward, Aynsley work very hard against their full forward and without his efforts the score would have been much higher.
Kevin Crowe who continues to work hard in the roving position, always hunting for the ball.
Michael O'Connor on debut showed he will be a force to be reckoned with. Michael played in the pockets and was a strong ball runner and also had a fantastic boot.
