Yesterday's pre season tournament was a huge success for the Howick Hornets AFL team. For over half the squad who played yesterday it was their very first time playing AFL not that you would have believed it had you seen their skills.
The Hornets faced the home team Manurewa Raiders first up and after a shaky start managed to come from behind in the second half to win 34-21. Next the team played the North Shore Tiger and was a similar story. North Shore Tigers who had a bye first round had fresh legs to burn and quickly amounted a lead. The Hornets dug deep in the second half and with the wind behind them closed the gap. The score was not recorded for this game but we know it was a close finish and neither team knows who won.
Finally the Hornets faced a mixed team of undefeated in 2016 champs Waitakere Magpies and the Mt Roskill Saints. The hornets put in a spirited performance on very tired legs having played 3 games back to back to back. Unfortunately the Hornets lost the match but the team took a lot out of the games.
A big thank you for those who turned up to support our team and a big congratulations to the team for their three big performances. Special mentions must be made to Alan " Big Al" Rathburn & Kevin "Kev" Crowe for their physical performance on ball and Shaneel "Shaq" Nyawo for lightning quick handballs. This was the players first time out on the footy field. Coach Andrew "Azza" Azzopardi was very impressed with the teams skills and desire to hunt and attack the ball, he also likes to remind everyone of the 3m hanger he caught on the back of a Raiders player.
This has set up a great solid platform to build our season off. The other club should be scared of the Hornets sting.
Up the Hornets.
